MathieuThe Domaine Mathieu represents a tradition of wine making that has been handed down from Father to Son for more than four centuries in a family which has carefully maintained its vine-stocks and excellence of production, while maintaining its independence.
The domaine, which covers 64 acres, is divided into a large number of plots located in and around the ramparts of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The grapes, consisting of no less than 13 varieties for red wine and four for white, are harvested manually, meticulously sorted, vinified by traditional methods and aged in oak casks before being bottled in the domaine’s own cellars. Both red and white wines regularly win prizes in national and international competitions.
There is a tendency to overlook Chteauneuf-du-Pape white wines, which amount to just 2% of the area’s production, but, in many respects, they are finer, more complex and more interesting than the much better-known reds.
Having had some experience of Domaine Mathieu wines, over a number of years, we have no hesitation in recommending them, especially those labelled ‘Marquis Anseleme Mathieu’.
