The Domaine du Val des Rois has been in the Bouchard family for nine generations, dating back to 1681 and Emmanuel Bouchard has raised the quality of the domaine’s production to new heights. There have over the years been some very poor wines sold in the U.K. under the ‘Cotes du Rhone’ banner, but we are confident that anyone tasting the wines from Domaine du Val des Rois for the first time will be most impressed by their quality: even the lowly Vin de Pays de Vacluse is a very full wine, lively in attack, but without aggressiveness. ‘Signature’ 2003, for example, is a full-bodied and complex wine and unanimously regarded as such. Its nose is already open with aromas of cooked fruits, prune, fig, mixed with spices. In the mouth, the volume appears gradually and structure prolongs the fruity taste. The earlier available vintages of this wine are equally delightful. All Domaine du Val des Rois wines are a blend of Grenache and Syrah varieties. The grapes are harvested by hand and, after total elimination of the vegetal part of the grape cluster, are pressed and undergo short vatting under controlled temperatures. This in an excellent producer whom we thoroughly recommend.
